Which currencies can I load onto my ABK Multi-Currency Prepaid Freedom card?

You can load the following currencies: Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD), US Dollar (USD), Pound Sterling (GBP), Euro (EUR), UAE Dirham (AED), Saudi Riyal (SAR), Bahraini Dinar (BHD), Swiss Franc (CHF), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Egyptian Pound (EGP), Qatari Riyal (QAR), Turkish Lira (TRY), and Indian Rupee (INR).

How does the ABK Multi-Currency Prepaid Freedom card work?

Load funds onto the card in Kuwaiti Dinars (KWD) first. From your KWD wallet, you can then transfer funds to up to 13 foreign currency wallets.

Example: To hold USD 100 on your card, you would transfer approximately KWD 28.764 from your KWD wallet to your USD wallet, based on the exchange rate applicable on that day and displayed before you confirm the transaction.

Once transferred, the exchange rate is locked in, so subsequent rate changes will not affect that wallet’s balance. If you then spend USD 10, your USD wallet balance will simply decrease to USD 90.

The same process applies to all other supported currencies. Please click here for current rates.

What if I don’t have enough funds in a currency wallet to complete a transaction?

If a purchase exceeds the balance available in that currency wallet, the full transaction amount will be charged to your KWD wallet instead, rather than being split between the two wallets. If your KWD wallet also has insufficient funds, the transaction will be declined, even if funds are available in other currency wallets.

Example: A USD 200 purchase with only USD 199 available in your USD wallet will be charged entirely to your KWD wallet (approximately KWD 57), even if you have EUR 1,000 available in your EUR wallet.

This applies to all currencies. We recommend keeping track of your wallet balances to avoid unexpected charges to your KWD wallet.

What if I make a transaction in a currency for which I don’t have a wallet?

The transaction will be charged entirely to your KWD wallet.

Can I transfer funds from one non-KWD wallet to another?

No. Direct transfers between two foreign currency wallets are not supported. You will need to transfer the funds to your KWD wallet first, and then from KWD to the target currency.

Example: To move funds from your USD wallet to your EUR wallet, transfer USD → KWD, then KWD → EUR.

What if I want to transfer all my wallet balances to my bank account?

All wallet balances will be converted to KWD at the exchange rate applicable on that day and credited to your bank account as a single KWD amount. Standard bank charges apply.

Tap 'n' Go
What is ABK Tap ‘n’ Go and how does it work?

ABK Tap ‘n’ Go is a contactless payment feature available on ABK cards. It uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, such as Visa payWave. Simply tap or wave your card over an NFC-enabled POS device without the need to insert or swipe it.

Where can I use ABK Tap ‘n’ Go?

You can use it anywhere you would normally use your card. If the POS device is NFC-enabled, simply tap or wave your card instead of inserting or swiping it.

How can I get an ABK Tap ‘n’ Go card?

All ABK cards come with Tap ‘n’ Go functionality built in, so no separate card is required.

Do I need to activate Tap ‘n’ Go before making a contactless payment?

No. Tap ‘n’ Go is active by default on all ABK cards.

Can I use my ABK Tap ‘n’ Go card internationally?

Yes. It works at any NFC-enabled POS terminal outside Kuwait that accepts Visa or Mastercard.

Is there a limit on the value of goods I can purchase with Tap ‘n’ Go?

For purchases under KD 25, no PIN is required — simply tap or wave your card. For purchases of KD 25 or more, PIN verification is required.

Will I be charged twice if I tap or wave my card twice on the POS device?

No. NFC-enabled terminals only process one transaction per card at a time. Each transaction must either be completed or voided before another can begin.

Is this technology as secure as traditional cards?

Yes. NFC-enabled cards carry the same multiple layers of security as other chip cards. They also use Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA), which generates a unique code for every transaction, helping prevent card details from being copied and reused for fraudulent transactions. Sensitive information such as your name and CVV (the 3-digit code on the back of your card) is not transmitted through NFC.
